Irapuato, Mexico (June 16, 2026) – Canada earned a silver medal at the FIBA U18 Women’s AmeriCup 2026 after falling to the United States 90-72 in Monday’s final.
Canada opened the championship game with a strong first quarter, jumping out to a 5-0 lead and building a six-point advantage before trailing by just three points after 10 minutes.
The United States seized control in the second quarter, outscoring Canada 28-15 to take a 52-36 lead into halftime. Canada responded after the break, winning the third quarter 20-17, but was unable to close the gap. The Americans benefited from a significant shooting advantage, connecting on 36% of their three-point attempts compared to Canada's 19%.
Savvy Swords earned All-Star Five honours after averaging 16.4 points, 9.0 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game throughout the tournament. The Sudbury, Ont. native finished fourth among all players in scoring and second in rebounding with 45 total rebounds.
“It’s a huge honour to be recognized as one of the top players in the tournament,” said Swords. “This was my first time putting on a Canada jersey since my injury, so it definitely meant a little more and brought a lot of confidence back that I had lost throughout that journey”.
The result marks another podium finish for Canada at the continental level, as the team concludes the tournament with a silver medal and qualification for the FIBA U19 Women’s Basketball World Cup 2027. Despite losing key contributors to injury during the competition, Canada advanced to the gold-medal game behind a balanced team effort and strong chemistry.
"We faced a lot of adversity throughout the tournament, but the players who stepped up filled big shoes and showed the depth of talent we have," said Brooke McLeod. "We had each other's backs until the final buzzer, and I'm proud of the way this group represented Canada."
