The Naismith Notes: Jamal Murray Drops First Career Triple-Double

We've spoken a lot about the work that Jamal Murray put into his rehab from the ACL surgery that caused him to miss all of last season and now we’re getting to see the results nightly. Murray has been putting in big performance after big performance as of late. In a 134-111 Denver Nuggets victory against the Indiana Pacers last Friday, Murray dropped a 17-point, 10-rebound, 14-assist line, joining teammate Nikola Jokic in the triple-double club this season.

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Himal <a href="https://t.co/LlX55kjEHo">pic.twitter.com/LlX55kjEHo</a></p>&mdash; Denver Nuggets (@nuggets) <a href="https://twitter.com/nuggets/status/1616654195859558401?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">January 21, 2023</a></blockquote><script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

It was the first triple-double of Murray’s career as the sharpshooter continues to show off all of the ways his all-around game has evolved. Murray followed up his triple-double performance with 26 points and nine assists against the Oklahoma City Thunder and 25 points and seven assists in a win against New Orleans on Wednesday. For the season, Murray is averaging 19.1 points, 5.7 assists, 4.2 rebounds and 1.1 steals per game.

The NBA's "rookie wall" is as much a part of a player's first professional season as having rookie duties before practices and road trips. It’s all but inevitable and yet Indiana Pacers rookie Bennedict Mathurin seems to be immune. The Montreal native is leading all rookies and players off the bench this season, averaging 17.6 points and 4.0 rebounds in 28.5 minutes per game. Mathurin is working on a rookie season that could finish with him winning Rookie of the Year, Sixth Man of the Year, or, potentially, both awards.

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Mathurin tonight:<br><br>26 PTS<br>7 REB<br>10-17 FG<br><br>Most points off the bench this season.<br>Most points by a rookie this season. <a href="https://t.co/YRfObjkduv">pic.twitter.com/YRfObjkduv</a></p>&mdash; StatMuse (@statmuse) <a href="https://twitter.com/statmuse/status/1618074146344423426?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">January 25, 2023</a></blockquote><script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

Mathurin has scored 26 points, 26 points and 23 points in his last three games, respectively. In Indiana’s recent 116-110 victory against the Chicago Bulls, Mathurin had 15 of his 26 points in the fourth quarter as Indiana came back from 21 down to snap a seven-game losing streak.

Count Pacers head coach Rick Carlisle among those impressed with the continued output from the 20-year-old rookie.

Another day, another win, another double-double for Aaliyah Edwards. In a 94-51 blowout victory for UConn against the DePaul Blue Demons on Monday night, Edwards finished with 23 points, 10 rebounds, four assists and a steal in 26 minutes. She shot 10-for-13 from the floor, led all scorers, and scored 15 of her 23 in the first half as UConn built a 17-point lead at the break. Edwards is averaging 17.2 points, 9.4 rebounds, 2.9 assists, 1.1 steals and 1.2 blocks per game in her junior season.

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Aaliyah’s just on a different level this season<br><br>23 points, 10 rebounds, 76.9 FG%, 4 assists vs. DePaul last night 💪 <a href="https://t.co/QY9H8lxWyy">pic.twitter.com/QY9H8lxWyy</a></p>&mdash; UConn Women’s Basketball (@UConnWBB) <a href="https://twitter.com/UConnWBB/status/1617913742100172800?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">January 24, 2023</a></blockquote><script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

She followed that up with 25 points, seven rebounds, four assists and a steal to help an undermanned UConn squad that had just seven players in uniform get a 84-67 victory against Tennessee on Thursday. Whenever she’s needed, and whatever it is that the team needs from her on a game-to-game basis, Edwards has excelled at providing this season.

The Temple Owls defeated the University of Houston Cougars 56-55 on Sunday as Kur Jongkuch sealed the victory with a huge block in the final seconds. The 6-foot-9 senior protected Temple’s lead as he leapt into action when Houston’s Jamal Shead drove to the rim, slapping the ball off the backboard and out of bounds with a second remaining. The Owls handed the Cougars just its second loss of the season thanks to Jongkuch’s heady defensive play.

Kellen Tynes has become a master of the steal. The Dartmouth, Nova Scotia native entered the University of Maine’s Wednesday night matchup against the UMass Lowell River Hawks as the NCAA leader in steals. Tynes is averaging 3.05 steals per game in his sophomore season and has 58 steals through 20 games played. Prior to Wednesday’s 75-70 victory, Tynes recorded six steals in a 78-57 blowout victory against the Binghamton Bearcats on Sunday.

Over at Duke University, Shy Day-Wilson has continued to impress head coach Kara Lawson in her second season with the Blue Devils. After lighting up the court in her freshman season and being named ACC freshman of the year, Day-Wilson has spent her sophomore showing her all-around game. Day-Wilson had 16 points to go with two rebounds and three assists in 31 minutes in Duke's 62-50 win against Syracuse on Sunday. She shot 5-for-8 from the floor in the win, while making all four of her free throw attempts. Her stats have been great, but Lawson has been most impressed with the steps Day-Wilson has made as a leader on the floor.

Back to the NBA, veteran Trey Lyles had a season-high 24 points in a 133-100 Sacramento Kings victory over the Memphis Grizzlies on Monday. Lyles shot 8-for-11 from the floor, connecting on 6-of-8 attempts from deep, while adding seven rebounds, three blocks and two steals in 25 minutes of action. The eighth-year forward has helped the Kings to a 27-20 record, third best in the Western Conference.

Finally, take some time to read about Team Canada veteran Tommy Scrubb’s basketball journey, as well as his pride in putting on the red and white. While playing professionally in Spain, Scrubb has hopped on a plane with zero hesitation whenever Team Canada has called, appearing in all 10 of Canada's Men's World Cup Qualifying games over the past year and change. His steady presence has helped lead the Senior Men’s National Team to an undefeated record in the FIBA Men’s Basketball World Cup Qualifiers.
