U17 WNT Defeats France 58-53 to Finish Seventh at World Championships

Zaragoza, Spain --The U17 Women's National Team defeated France XX on Saturday to finish seventh at the FIBA World Championships.

Starting for Canada was Shaina Pellington, Roxane Makolo, Alyssa Jerome, Sarah Donovan and Laeticia Amihere.

Kyla Shand came off the bench to lead Canada with 12 points, while grabbing six rebounds. Amihere and Pellington each contributed eight points. Carla Mbaye was France's top scorer with 10 points. For full box score click here.

Amihere had a game-high eight boards as Canada out-rebounded France 55-37. Canada was particularly dominant holding a 25-14 edge on the offensive glass, where Amihere, Donovan and Shand grabbed five apiece.

The game started slowly with the teams combining for just five points in the first five minutes. Canada trailed 3-0 early but surged to a 14-8 lead after one quarter. An evenly played second quarter saw Canada take a 29-25 lead into halftime.

Things remained close for much of the third quarter, before the Canadians closed the period on a 9-3 run to give themselves a bit of breathing room with a 46-36 lead through 30 minutes. France chipped away at Canada's lead in the fourth quarter and pulled to within 53-51 with just under two minutes to play before Amihere responded with a three-point play that put Canada ahead 56-51 with 45 seconds remaining.

Canada finishes the championships with a 4-2 record. Amihere was the team's top scorer with 12.5 points per game, and averaged 13.0 rebounds to lead all players.
