Le Canada a débuté la Coupe du monde masculine de basketball FIBA U19 2024 par une défaite par la marque de 86 à 53 face à l’Espagne samedi à Debrecen en Hongrie. 

RÉSUMÉ DE LA RENCONTRE

- C’est l’Espagne qui a pris l’avantage tôt dans le match dans le premier quart, avant d’infliger un 12 à 3 au Canada dans les 3:52 dernières minutes du quart-temps pour prendre une avance de 14 points dans le deuxième quart.

- Bien que le Canada ait réussi à rester au contact de son adversaire dans les trois derniers quarts-temps, le retard accumulé en début de rencontre était trop important pour que le Canada réussisse à inverser la tendance. L’Espagne a battu le Canada par la marque de 59 à 46 dans les trois derniers quarts-temps et a réussi à l’emporter pour prendre la première place du groupe A.

- Michael Nwoko a réalisé un très bon match pour sa première rencontre en Coupe du monde. Il a en effet enregistré un total de 18 points à 7 en 14 aux tirs, ainsi que quatre rebonds et deux vols.

- Elijah Fisher et Jordann Dumont ont tous les deux inscrit huit points, le deuxième meilleur total parmi les joueurs canadiens. Fisher a connu des difficultés aux tirs, mais a réussi à convertir six de ses neuf tentatives aux lancers francs, et a aussi fini meilleur rebondeur de son équipe avec un total de sept rebonds. Dumont a eu un rendement de 3 en 5 aux tirs et a inscrit deux des quatre paniers à trois points du Canada de la rencontre.

‍RECORDS

- Grâce à ses 18 points, Nwoko fait autant que le total de points inscrits par Caleb Houstan et Zach Edey face à la Lituanie lors de l’édition 2019 du tournoi. C’est le plus grand nombre de points marqués par un Canadien lors d’un match d’ouverture de la Coupe du monde masculine de basketball FIBA U19 depuis les 20 points de RJ Barrett en 2017.

- L’Espagne a battu le Canada à une Coupe du monde masculine de basketball FIBA U19 depuis 2017 grâce à cette victoire. Le Canada l’avait emporté en quart de finale de l’édition 2021 du tournoi, grâce notamment aux 25 et aux 24 points de Houstan et d’Edey. Elijah Fisher, qui est membre de l’équipe du Canada de cette année, avait inscrit deux points lors de la victoire de 2021.

‍À SUIVRE 

- Le Canada aura l’opportunité de rebondir immédiatement, alors que les rencontres du groupe A continuent dimanche. Le Canada va affronter la Chine qui a perdu par la marque de 83 à 63 pour son premier match de la Coupe du monde samedi face à la France. 

- Les deux pays se sont rencontrés pour la dernière fois lors de la Coupe du monde masculine de basketball FIBA U19 en 2013, un match que le Canada avait remporté par la marque de 110 à 100.

- Le début de la rencontre est prévu pour 9h HE / 6h00 HP. La rencontre sera diffusée en direct sur la chaîne YouTube de la FIBA.
